Why Do Cats Purr
Many members of the feline family including lynx, cougar, and domestic cat can purr. Cats purr by pulsing muscles in their larynx and diaphragm. These rhythmic vibrations occur while breathing in and out at a frequency between 25 and 150 hertz. But why do they do it? It is believed that cats' purring is a kind of self-medication. Their purring occurs at a low level frequency that was discovered to help build bone density. This could explain why cats recover from traumatic injuries and broken bones faster than other animals.
