Why Do Our Fingers Prune?

I'm sure you've been swimming or taken a particularly long bath and have noticed that your fingers become wrinkled or "prune." But why does this happen? Scientists believe the answer is evolution. Long ago, when humans were hunters and gatherers, we needed to be able to maintain stability while in water. When our fingers prune, it makes it easier to grip slippery surfaces, allowing for a greater range of movement on slick rocks while attempting to catch food. Fun fact: your feet also prune!
